Is off-the-shelf eLearning any good?

 ‘Off the shelf’ and ‘eLearning’ aren’t exactly the most adrenaline-inducing terms. It’s no surprise that when you put them together, you don’t necessarily go to grab the popcorn and buckle up for the ride of your life.

But we’re here to challenge those preconceptions all the way – and show you why eLearning isn’t what you thought it might be. Seriously.


Instant access and flexible delivery

Off the shelf eLearning is literally as accessible to your team as a bag of flour on the shelf of Sainsbury’s. Well, if they could download that bag of flour from anywhere, from any device, anyway.

As on-demand course libraries are designed to be accessed on any device, you can train your team whenever and wherever they choose. And you don’t need to book in a slot with on-site instructors AND make sure the whole team can attend at the same time (something that might be comparable to cracking the enigma code). Let’s face it, people are more likely to be into something if they can access it where and when they want to.

This teamed with the fact that online training sees a rapid deployment of content, makes us think “yeah actually, it's pretty good”. So, look out for providers with regularly updated content that you can access instantly. If you’re signed up for off-the-shelf eLearning, that doesn’t mean you get what’s in the library and nothing more ever again – or, at least, it shouldn’t mean that.


Expert knowledge / Highest quality (CPD & IOSH)

Like with most things these days, eLearning has quality control checks. These go a little further than just checking the spelling, grammar and if the visuals look good. Because, while those are clearly important aspects, you may want a little more assurance that it wasn’t just Auntie Jackie’s sister’s brother’s boy who created and curated your eLearning experience. Unless of course he’s an expert in his field.

You want to know that the training you’re investing your time and money in, is industry approved. That’s where the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) come in. When looking for your eLearning provider, look for the mark of approval from an IOSH recognised provider. You should also look out for CPD (Continuing Professional Development standards office) certification and recognition. That way you can guarantee the training you’re putting your team through has gotten the nod from a professional body.

That’s the other bonus of standardised eLearning, it allows the courses to be accredited so you know you’re getting the best of the best.


Standardised doesn’t mean it lacks quality or content

Just because something is standardised, it doesn’t mean that everyone has the same experience. We all learn differently, so why force someone to learn a certain way with single learning paths? There’s no point in partaking in eLearning and not retaining the information, that’s wasting time for everyone. You might as well have spent the time in the pub.

Back to the flour. When it comes to iAM, we’re not talking about Sainsbury’s basics flour.
