Challenging Behaviour and De-escalation

What is challenging behaviour? It’s behaviour which can be difficult to respond to in the moment. This could look like defiance, disruption, or refusal, but may be linked to stress, anxiety, frustration, sensory need, or difficulties a pupil can’t easily express. This de-escalation training course has been designed as school-specific content, and will help you recognise early signs of escalation, understand what behaviour might be communicating, and use practical de-escalation techniques.

Learning outcomes:
  • Recognise that challenging behaviour is a form of communication, so you can respond with understanding
  • Identify early signs of escalation, so you can prevent situations from reaching a crisis point
  • Describe effective de-escalation, so you can maintain safety and dignity
