KCSIE - Keeping Children Safe in Education

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Trauma

Challenging experiences are a normal part of growing up. But Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can overwhelm children and have a lifelong impact on their welfare. With tailored and compassionate support, students can process their trauma and build healthy coping mechanisms. This course will introduce you to ACEs and trauma and how they can impact children.

Learning outcomes:
  • Identify what adverse childhood experiences and trauma are, so you understand the relevance of ACE scores
  • Recognise how trauma and ACEs may impact students, so you can take a child-centred approach to safeguarding
  • Identify how to support students who have experienced trauma and ACEs, so you can contribute to maintaining a trauma-informed school
