Children with Family Members in Prison
You may not be aware that a child you work with has a family member who is in prison. But impacted students may require tailored support to help them process their experience and build healthy coping mechanisms. This course will introduce you to the impact that the incarceration of a family member can have on a child. You’ll also learn how to support impacted students and collaborate with their caregivers to prioritise the child’s welfare.
Learning outcomes:
- Recognise the impact that having a family member in prison can have on children, so you can spot when a child may need additional support
- Identify how you and your colleagues can support students who have an incarcerated family member to make sure they’re adequately safeguarded
Having relatives in prison can be tough for children, and they may need extra help. This course will introduce you to how having a family member in prison can impact a student. It’ll also walk you through how you and your colleagues can support students dealing with the incarceration of a family member.
Although created as school-specific content, if you work with children in any capacity, you’ll find this course useful. Everyone who works with students in an educational environment will especially benefit from learning about safeguarding those who have an incarcerated family member.
