KCSIE - Keeping Children Safe in Education

Fabricated or Induced Illness

Fabricated or Induced Illness (FII) is a rare and complex form of child abuse. FII occurs when a caregiver exaggerates, fabricates, or induces symptoms in a child in their care. It can be difficult to spot, and like all forms of abuse, it can seriously undermine a student’s welfare. This school-specific course will introduce you to FII and the different ways impacted students may experience it. You’ll learn how to spot the signs and support victims so that you can prioritise their safety and recovery.

Learning outcomes:
  • Recognise what Fabricated or Induced Illness (FII) is, so you can understand the impact it can have on students
  • Identify the signs that could suggest a child is experiencing FII, so you can take steps to safeguard students who may be experiencing it
  • Recognise how to support students who are victims of FII, so you can prioritise their welfare and protect them from harm
