KCSIE - Keeping Children Safe in Education

So-Called Honour-Based Abuse

You may have heard the term, but what is honour-based abuse? It’s not an easy answer. So-called honour-based abuse, or HBA, is an umbrella term that covers a wide range of harmful practices. These include female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage. So-called HBA can have a profound, life-long impact on victims. It can be difficult to identify, so you must know what to look out for and how to respond. This school-specific course will help.

Learning outcomes:

  • Recognise what so-called honour-based abuse is, so you can contribute fully to a safeguarding culture.
  • Identify the signs that might suggest a student is at risk of experiencing so-called honour-based abuse, so you can take steps to prioritise their welfare.
  • Recognise how to respond if you suspect a child might be a victim of so-called honour-based abuse, so you can act promptly to protect them from further harm.
