Introduction to a Sustainable School
This course is designed to be school specific content. Breaktime’s over, time for some maths... Take the amount of energy all UK schools use and add that to the amount of waste they all generate, then multiply the total by zero. That’s the UK’s mission – to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 – and schools will play a huge part in achieving this goal. This course will help get you there.
Learning outcomes:
- Recognise how a more sustainable school will save money and improve the health of pupils and staff
- Identify potential barriers to progress and potential solutions in making your school more sustainable, ensuring you can have effective conversations around which actions to take
- Outline an action plan for moving the school toward a carbon-neutral status, involving students, staff, and the local community

This course, although primarily about sustainability in schools, may also help with sustainability in business, of applied correctly. It will guide you through the concept of net zero and explain the role that schools have in helping achieve this. And it’ll cover some of the barriers you might face as you take steps to reduce your carbon footprint. The knowledge gained from taking this course will also help you develop an action plan using a collective approach.
This course contains school-specific content, so it’s for school staff, school leaders, and business managers, but everyone can get involved and understand the part they play in achieving the net-zero target.

This course also has an assessment at the end which allows learners to test their understanding and helps businesses demonstrate a level of competence in the topic.
