Control of Cross Contamination

Have you ever found something in your food that’s not meant to be there? A piece of plastic, a bit of hair, or maybe even a fly? Yuk. All of these are signs that your food is contaminated. Rather more worryingly, there are some contaminants that make people very sick, or worse, which can’t be seen with the naked eye.

But how do these things get into food in the first place? Well, often it happens through cross-contamination, and that’s a big problem in the food industry, which needs to be controlled. And, if you work anywhere in the food supply chain, controlling cross-contamination is your responsibility. Managers and other people in charge also need to know about the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point, or HACCP, principles, and how to use them.

What you will learn

By taking this course, you’ll gain an understanding of cross-contamination which will help you explain the 4 types of contamination, and the 3 main ways that cross-contamination can occur. You’ll also be able to put safe working techniques into practice, to reduce risk, and explain the benefits of a HACCP plan.

About this course

Remember that scene in Ghostbusters when Egon warned Pete not to cross the energy streams that they used to hoover up ghosts? It was only a small thing, but it could have led to disastrous consequences. So, Egon was trying to control the situation.

In the world of food safety, we’re not talking about energy streams but a contaminant-infested equivalent. If you cross-contaminate, you’re liable to unleash something even more deadly than the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. It’s no laughing matter.

Engaging the learner

Like a lot of health and safety areas, cross-contamination is a serious subject, but it can be difficult to deliver in a way that sticks. So, to make some seriously good learning happen, we’ve approached it in a creative way that’ll help engage the learner and deliver knowledge they’ll retain. Using a familiar character, and easy to understand language, this course turns a big subject into manageable bitesize learning, through the power of storytelling.

This course is approved by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, or IOSH, one of the world’s leading health and safety organisations. Through interactive visual and multiple choice knowledge checkers, and a varied quiz bank, learners are able to solve problems as they go, to assess their new knowledge. And our unique downloadable blended material that accompanies the course is full of handy reminders to continuously reinforce the learning.
