Depression and Low Mood

Depression & Low Mood

Everyone is at risk of suffering depression. So, taking this course will give you the knowledge and understanding you might need to help yourself or someone you care about. While depression can encompass a wide range of symptoms and can vary in severity, it should never be dismissed or taken lightly. You can’t just ‘get over it’. Anyone that says you can is wrong. The black dog, as depression is sometimes known, is no joke. After taking this course, you might one day be in a position to save someone’s life. Even your own. Yep, it’s that serious.

What you will learn

Depression is a terrible thing. What’s worse is that many people still don’t take it seriously. Take this course and you’ll learn to recognise the symptoms of depression and the difference between depression and sadness. But it’s not all theoretical. It’s important that you know where to go to get help and what recovery from depression looks like, too. This course will explain it all.

Depression and Low Mood

About this course

We’ve all felt low at some point. The stresses of modern life can do that to the best of us. But depression is a different beast altogether. If you’ve suffered or do suffer from depression, then you’ll understand how hard it is to seek help. You see, that’s one of the ironies of this horrific mental illness. It ‘fogs up’ your brain and clouds your vision so you don’t see the help available or the point in accepting it.

Engaging the learner

This course takes place in everyday settings that everyone will recognise. We purposely kept it simple and relatable. Depression is a sensitive subject, and we didn’t want to distract from the learning in any way whatsoever. We did want to make it clear from the outset that depression isn’t a taboo subject, but that it can be difficult to talk about. So, we’ve added a link to another short course on how to have a conversation about mental health, along with a supporting PDF and factsheet.

Once you’re comfortable with how to approach the conversation, you’ll look at depression in more depth to help you recognise it more easily. Later, there’s an interactive click and reveal section that helps maintain engagement. This explains some of the negative thought patterns that can lead to depression.

There’s no quiz at the end of this course, we didn’t think it would be appropriate. But there is a workbook that you can download and take away which includes some helpful links to outside organisations that offer help.
