Responding to Difficult Events

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. This proverb might help when we’re dealing with day-to-day troubles, but things aren’t so simple when we’re facing more significant trials and tribulations. We’re never ready for the impact of losing a loved one, for example, or sustaining a serious injury, or suffering a traumatic experience. This course offers guidance on how you can build up your emotional resilience so that you can respond more mindfully to difficult events like these.

What you will learn

We all go through challenging times in life. If we’re not at all prepared for them, we can get knocked off our feet. This course will help you identify the most difficult events that life might throw at you. By understanding a little about the psychological impact of these events and equipping yourself with the right coping mechanisms, you’ll be able to maintain your mental well-being when they occur.

About this course

Human beings are pretty tough. Just watch the film 127 Hours. It tells the true story of a hiker who gets trapped in a canyon and has to sever his own arm to save his life. That was certainly a remarkable way of responding to a difficult event. Yet, difficult events don’t just mean extraordinary, life-or-death situations which involve some DIY amputation. We can all be faced with challenging events, such as losing a job, going through a painful divorce, or succumbing to a serious illness. These are highly stressful and sometimes traumatic times, and many of us struggle to cope with the repercussions. Fortunately, there are ways to help control our composure and keep stress in check when we confront such challenges.

Engaging the learner

As a pretty bleak topic, it was somewhat of a challenge for us when creating it to find a device for delivering the learning as directly as possible. We needed a real-life example scenario of a seriously difficult life event, and we chose the story of Aron Ralston – made popular in the film 127 Hours. This gave us a departure point for discussing other difficult events.

We started by imagining how Aron’s parents would have coped had he not survived, and we used these characters throughout the course to explore different life events which can cause stress and other emotional hardship. The focus is on empowering the learner to be more mindful in their approach to the toughest challenges in life, and we made sure to imbue the advice given with a spirit of positivity and compassion. We included short interactive sections which give the learner time to reflect and learn at their own pace
