Unconscious Bias - Landing pages image 2

Unconscious Bias

How would you feel if you were passed up for promotion because of your accent? Or you didn’t get the job because you’re living in an area that is perceived as undesirable? It’s simply not right. Without knowing it consciously, you could be doing that to someone else. Take this course, and in a few minutes you’ll have a better understanding about how to make the world, and your organization, a fairer place.

What you will learn

This course explains what unconscious bias is, and where it comes from. It’s something all of us should make an effort to understand, because sometimes we are unwilling or unable to acknowledge and address it. Unconscious biases can have a negative impact on an organization’s working environment. To overcome unconscious bias, we must recognize the symptoms, and challenge them.

About this course

Consciously, your brain can process 40 pieces of information per second, and there’s a heck of a lot more going on in the background. Your brain is pretty brilliant, but every now and again it takes shortcuts. Well, you, would, wouldn’t you?

Thanks to a combination of your culture, upbringing & environment, we all have unconscious biases – our brain makes decisions for us, without us even realising. That might be hiring someone because of their gender, or giving a project to a friend rather than someone better suited to it. It’s not your fault – we are all susceptible to this. But you do need to learn how to keep unconscious bias in check, and that’s what this course will help with.

Engaging the learner

Unconscious bias is a delicate topic, but when we developed this course, we were very conscious of the fact that you can’t confront the issue if you’re treading on eggshells. Striking the perfect balance between plain speaking and sensitive language, the script for this course hits all the right notes with regard to describing the problem of unconscious bias, and how you can overcome it.

With a script this good, you don’t need flashy visuals to demonstrate the importance of the key takeaways. Something as simple as changing the colour of one iAM character from blue to red reinforces the message. And a simple mnemonic, ‘MASTER’, will help you recall key points to eliminate bias in the workplace. We all make reflex judgments based on subconscious factors and associations. By gently guiding the learner towards a more informed understanding of the issue and testing them with assessment questions, this training can be the cornerstone of your organisation’s effort to tackle unconscious bias.
